Spring 2019 Guitar Ensemble
Our Spring 2019 Guitar Ensemble concert was short by normal standards, owing to the unusual semester leave by no less than three studio members. Still, it was well-attended and the students played beautifully. Here is a recap:
We opened with a group of early Baroque monody, sung by soprano Nicole Hong and accompanied on the theorbo by Collin Sterne (full program at the end of the post):
Next we had a guitar duo arrangement of Debussy’s Clair de Lune, as performed by Julia Bodian and Eliza Balmuth:
Next up was some more early music, this time in the form of Elizabethan Ayres of Dowland, as presented by soprano Abigail Hakel-Garcia and guitarist Caeli Massey:
The program concluded with a rousing performance of Britten’s Folk Song Arrangements by soprano Caroline Wolfe and Craig Slagh. They imbued the familiar songs with intensity and purpose, and Caroline’s performance was delightfully theatrical and compelling. Congratulations, all!
