Julia Humphrey Bodian's Junior Recital
Julia gave her second concert at Oberlin this week--her Junior Recital. (There would have been more already, but she transferred here from the University of Southern California, so had her first year there). The concert featured works by Bach, Mertz, Rawsthorne and Barrios. There was no question of her mastery over the material, particularly in the Rawsthorne, which was delivered with virtuosic intensity and thoughtful introspection in equal measure. It was easy to see how she won one of the top prizes in the Stroud Competition the previous month.
The recital was well-attended by an enthusiastic, even raucous crowd; they demanded an encore and got one in the form of the highly entertaining American Fantasy by the great Argentine guitarist-composer, Jorge Morel, one of Julia's prior teachers.
My post on her Sophomore recital is here.
Here are some shots from the concert; the program follows.
