Guitar students at Oberlin Conservatory once again took my breath away with their expert and heartfelt readings in last night's concert. We featured everything from voice to trombone to flute to cello in a program that ranged stylistically from Baroque to modern. We had a terrific turnout. Excellent performances, gang!!!
Our Ensemble concerts take place in the acoustically perfect Kulas Recital Hall (165 seats):
Our concert began with a lovely reading of the famous Bach Cantata aria, Wachet auf, BWV 140 (arr., W. Ghezzi), performed by soprano Amelia Keenan, Tasi Hiner, flute and Daniel Nitsch, guitar:
Guitarist Jacob Blizard was joined by flutist Erica Zheng for Lowell Lieberman's Sonata:
Soprano Kaeli Mogg was accompanied by guitarist Sarah Boyson in a reading of two arias from Handel's Messiah (my arrangements):
In our unlikeliest combination, trombonist Adrian Singleton and guitarist Crispin Swank played Bachianas Brasilieras of Villa Lobos:
Guitarist Simon Lin played Rodrigo's Three Spanish Songs with soprano Sarah Sims:
Cellist Maurice Cohn and guitarist Max Lyman played Dusan Bogdanovic's gorgeous Quatre Pièces Intimes:
Finally, soprano Olivia Boen and Lenny Renallo gave a stirring reading of Britten's Songs From the Chinese.
