Fall 2022 Guitar Ensemble II
Our second Guitar Ensemble outing took place before Thanksgiving. It featured the remaining mixed chamber music projects the studio took on this semester. There was one cancellation from the intended program and a rejiggering of the order resulted (the Shankar piece was re-set for Spring semester), so the printed program doesn’t agree with the sequence illustrated here, but is provided at the end of the post for full details.
We began with an unusual french horn/guitar rendering of some of the Sor Seguidillas, as played by hornist Jonathan Bruzon and guitarist Damian Goggans:
Next was an affecting reading of the nine Sefardic songs, as arranged for voice, flute and guitar by Manuel Valls. Soprano Delaney Fox and flutist Emily Nixon joined guitarist Sara Baunoch for this compelling trio:
The brisk and jazzy flute/guitar duet, John Doe’s Running, by Dierdre Lynds followed, in a spirited reading by flutist Daphe te Boekhorst and guitarist Nicolas Wakeman:
The irresistible tango-infused Suite Buenos Aires followed. A flute and guitar duet, it was presented with grace by flutist Daniel Jordan and guitarist Josie Stone:
Our program concluded with a presentation of the entire Gran Duetto Concertante, Op 52 of Giuliani, in a brilliant reading by flutist Gabriel Cruz Ruiz and guitarist Aleksandr Lapshin:
This was a very successful chamber music outing and the conclusion of a big semester of collaborative music-making. Bravo to all participants!
