Fall 2017 Guitar Ensemble I

Fall 2017 Guitar Ensemble I

The first of our two Guitar Ensemble concerts this semester took place last week. I was thrilled with the results. The students rose admirably to the occasion and gave a rousing performance of varied and difficult music. Here is a summary (full program at the end).

Rebecca Klein, on Baroque guitar, with gamba player Ruby Brailler, offered a highly effective and delightful, period-true opener with music of Marais and Le Cocq:

Violinist Abigail Hakel-Gracia and guitarist Collin Sterne played Collin's arrangements of three short works of Bartok:

Our repertoire staple, Piazzola's l'Histoire du Tango, found it's way onto the stage again, but this time presented in a fresh interpretation by recorder wunderkind Peter Lim, and ably assisted by guitarist Craig Slagh:

The long-standing duo of flutist Katie Kim and guitarist Brian King then offered up three movements from Alan Thomas' Balkan Songbook. This was a compelling and highly polished performance:

The program concluded with a rousing and riveting interpretation of the guitar duo classic, Tonadilla, of Joaquin Rodrigo, as played by Aidan Wiley-Lippke and Julia Humphrey:
