Eastman School of Music Guitar Professor Nicholas Goluses played and taught a master class at the University of Akron last week. He brought his charismatic combination of earthy charm, erudite observation, masterful interpretation and bon vivant with him. This was a repeat visit to Akron for Goluses, who has played both there and at Oberlin on numerous occasions over the years.
His recital began with his standard opener, the exquisite Homenaje of de Falla, and then unrolled selections from his newest CD, From Afar, including that important eponymous work by Joseph Schwantner. Also featured was Britten's Nocturnal, three Epitafios by Theodorakis, and a Sonata by Sor.
Goluses taught four U. of Akron guitar students (and a flutist) in his master class. Daniel Silverman played Prelude No. 5 by Villa Lobos.
Philip Logan played the final movement of Moreno-Torroba's Sonata in A.
Dustin Moralle played an excerpt from Giuliani's Rossiniane No. 1, Op. 119:
Finally, The Galestro-Smith Duo (Angela Galestro, flute and Jonathan Smith, guitar) played "He's Gone Away" from Beaser's Mountain Songs.
